The Freshman team was defeated by Verrado last night.
“Can’t say that it was never in doubt, but an early lead, a halftime edge, and an overpowering second half led Desert Edge JV Girl’s basketball team to a 53-40 5A Desert West Section victory Tuesday evening at the Verrado Vipers Athletic Center.
The DE Scorpions never trailed in the game, and used a 14-6 run to start the 1st quarter to take command of their eventual win over the Vipers.
Gabi Frederick initiated the run with multiple jumpers from the right, followed by a few Vipers turnovers and subsequent layups from Amayah Manning, to ignite a fast start on the night. Scorpions led at the halfway point by a score of 31-21.
The Scorpions advantage continued to inch upward until a high-water mark of 41-28 with 2:33 to play in the third quarter.
The Scorpions finished with four players in double figures led by Fredericks 17 points. Amayah Manning scored 11 points while Madison Gardner chipped in with 10 points, and coming off the bench with a strong performance was Lylonee Mata with 12 points.
The Scorpions Defense proved to be the difference in the win, and their ability to knock down the 3 point shot tonight was huge. Scorpions will try to extend their string Friday at home against the visiting Havasu Knights.” Coach Hughes
The Varsity squad came ready to play and took a commanding 40-6 lead halfway through the game. The final score was 55-22. The highlight of the evening was Senior Mackenzie Kinsel tallying her 1,000th career point in the 2nd quarter. Verrado Head Coach Vernon Beard and their AD were gracious in allowing us to stop the game and recognize her achievement. Mackenzie became the 3rd player in DE history to surpass 1,000 pts.
Mackenzie 14 pts
Jalaya 13 pts, 6 rebs
Karina 7 rebs
Haley 5 rebs, 4 stls
Zana 3 stls
