“The freshmen girls had their first game of the season last night against Dysart. They started out strong in the first quarter getting steals and making shots. The second quarter of the game did not end well for us as we were unable to score. The girls made adjustments in our defense and rallied in the second half of the game and were able to hold Dysart to only 1 point in the 3rd quarter. Savanah Black led our team in the 4th quarter by grabbing rebounds and getting to the free throw line. Kaleah Steele, Melanie Gonzalea Beltran, and Kayla Cervantes created great defensive pressure which led to creating turnovers. High scorer of the night was Savanah Black with 9 points.”
From Coach Ashlee Engle:
From Coach Brent Hughes:
“Christina Sausedo scored a game-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting, Tralay Jones added 8 more and the Desert Edge JV Girls basketball team dominated Dysart in an 36-16 defeat of the Dysart Demons on Tuesday night.
The Scorpions saw contributions from a handful of players all over the floor en route to a 21-8 lead at the halfway mark. Sausedo’s steal and 18’ foot jumper highlighted her team’s 14-2 run to start the second quarter with Jones, and Nya Dey all scoring inside giving the Scorpions the double digit lead, Aysa Willis also added a jumper from from deep with under a minute to play.
A 15-6 run in the second half put the game away for the Scorpions. Anysia Gallegos’ on Ball Defense was the difference maker in the second half recording 4 steals and two assists and the DE Scorpions never looked back.”
Varsity defeated Dysart 73-42. The defense caused 32 Demons’ turnovers.
