Varsity Recap: Coach Lovely
Buzzer shot ends the evening on a sour note
Last night the Scorpions hosted region opponent Cactus High. The focus for the Scorpions was to win 3 of the last 4 games in hopes that would be enough to solidify their first playoff appearance since 2013.
The game started out slow for both teams but the Scorpions struggled missing easy layups and turning the ball over, the end of the 1st quarter the team settled down and the score was 10 – 6 with Cactus leading. The 2nd qtr was better as the Scorpions put up 19 pts going into halftime trailing 25 – 27. The 2nd half with a few defensive adjustments saw DE the take the lead as the 3rd qtr ended 40 – 37. The fourth period the Scorpions came out playing very aggressive and built up an 11 pt lead 50 – 39, with less than 3 minutes left. Cactus then scrambled and scored 11 pts on 4 straight possessions three 3pt shots and a layup to tie the game. The rest of the game was back and forth and with 5.2 seconds on the clock the score was 59, the Scorpions had possession of the ball and called time out to script out their last play. With the ball out of bound the play worked to perfection with a layup being the result, unfortunately the layup was missed and a scramble for the ball ensued Cactus retrieved the ball and threw it up to no avail. The buzzer sounded and the game was headed to overtime (or so that’s what everyone thought). As the teams huddled up the officials called the teams back onto the court as they put .08 seconds back on the clock claiming Cactus called a timeout. The Scorpions were left stunned as a full court pass was thrown to a Cactus player as he caught and hit a 3pt shot that ended the game.
The Scorpions fell to 12 – 10 overall. While still sitting in 3rd place in the region, will be fighting for a playoff spot next week as we go on the road against Peoria and Lake Havasu.
