Multiple Teams · DE Scorpion Tennis Update

NAIA DE tennis team took on the Division 1 Flagstaff team yesterday and the results were better than expected. The NAIA team is not supposed to beat the Division 1 schools. Flagstaff’s #1 was undefeated and had yet to lose a single game. So yea, we lost 9-0 but our #1 got a game off their #1 so we celebrated.

Desert Edge (1-4) hosted a rare tennis double header against Flagstaff (4-1), with the girls starting at 1:45pm and the boys at 3:30. The Lady Scorpions came out flat in the double’s portion, with the #1 Scorpion duo of Philana Nguyen/Delaney Auer quickly falling into a 1-7 hole. After a quick pep talk on the changeover and changing the strategy; Nguyen/Auer stormed back winning five games in a row to push it 6-7. With the score at 30-30, an errant forehand and unforced volley error, game Flagstaff putting Desert Edge 0-3 down overall heading into the singles portion.

Coach Kraynick pulled his team together for motivation and a strategy session, and the Lady Scorpions responded coming strong out of the gate, minimizing mistakes across the board and making Flagstaff work hard for every point. Scorpion’s #1 ace pushed highly touted freshman Brooke Freshour before falling 4-6, 2-6. Scorpion’s #2 Delaney Auer continued her winning ways knocking off Eagle’s #2 Meghan Mooney 6-1, 6-4. Auer went 2-0 this week with singles wins over Cortez and Flagstaff.

Edge’s #3 Tiffany Delgado split the first two-sets; 7-5, 2-6, before falling 5-10 in the third to Flagstaff’s Savannah Bell. Edge’s #4 Rachel Burnett fought through an injured wrist and a bloodied hand before falling 4-6, 2-6 to a tough Erica King. #5 Natalie Figueroa had her best match of the year as a newcomer to the Lady Scorpions tennis team, falling 3-6, 3-6 to another highly prospective freshman Allie Thomas. Scorpion’s freshman Drucelle Pedrosa, coming off a big win against Cortez, fought valiantly splitting the first two sets against Flagstaff’s Catherine Gripp 4-6, 7-6(7-5) before falling 10-12 in the third.

The Lady Scorpions look to regroup over Spring Break before having three matches the week back from break, starting with Buckeye on March 19 here at Desert Edge.
