Girls Varsity Badminton · Desert Edge Lady Scorpions nearly pulled off two dramatic upsets at State

The Desert Edge Lady Scorpions nearly pulled off two dramatic upsets today in the first round of the AIA Division II State Singles/Doubles Badminton Championships. Sophomore standout Melissa Leor started off quickly, taking the first game from Saguaro’s Jaya Huma 21-16. Huma quickly rebounded rattling off 5 quick points in the second game, before Leor shifted gears and rallied back, eventually tying the contest 17-17. Both players traded service changes before Huma captialized on a missed overhead smash, held next point and took game two 19-21 for Saguaro. In the deciding game 3: Saguaro roared to life as DE’s Leor fighting fatigue and a flu bug, took the contest 21-5 in the third frame.

Jaya Huma (Saguaro) def. Melissa Leor (DE) 16-21, 21-19, 21-5.
The Senior pairing of  DE’s Philana Nguyen/Natalie Figueroa had the main gym rocking as they took on team playoff bound Kailey Bazan/Kiany Rodriquez of Greenway. Desert Edge and Greenway’s doubles team battled back and forth with numerous long rallies, athletic feats of stretch shots and both teams not giving an inch to the other with Desert Edge taking the first game 22-20 on a service ace by Natalie Figueroa. The Lady Scorpions started out strong in the second contest, and much like the first, both teams brought it to each other with both sides committing a few mental mistakes, before Greenway took a slight nudge, a ripping smash up the line, and receiver error to give Greenway game two 18-21. In the final deciding game three, just like the previous two, stealing the show, both sides were neck and neck with each other trading points, long rallies, quick reflexes and determination. A quick fade shot and hitting error sealed the deal for Greenway as they took game three 19-21.
