Our Desert Edge Girls Soccer Team kicked the season off last night by defeating Greenway 6-1! Valerie Llamas started the scoring for DE with an early goal. Greenway immediately responded with a goal of their own to tie the score at 1. But it was all DE from that point on as we scored two more first half goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead and added three goals in the second half to put the game away. Freshman Valerie Llamas arrived on the varsity scene with a bang by putting in three goals. Junior Kayla Garcia, our leading scorer from last year, was constantly applying pressure on the Greenway defense and finished with three goals of her own. Seniors Mercedes Stevwing and Jasmine Pulido anchor the defense with outstanding play and leadership that held Greenway to only three shots on goal. Senior Arial Baca, last year 1st team all-region goalkeeper, stepped up to fill a mid-field position in the first half and did an excellent job winning possession and distributing to teammates. She even assisted on an early goal. She then closed the game out by hopping back into the goal and pitching a second half shutout that included a great save. Overall, it was a great start to the season for the ladies. We dominated the time of possession and shots on goal. Many of our young, inexperienced girls got on the field and showed they can compete for time on the varsity level. We are excited about the direction of our program and hope to carry this early momentum into a difficult region match with Deer Valley on Friday! Go Scorpions!
