The girls’ soccer team went 1-1 last week. They played a tough region game against Cactus on Tuesday. DE’s Valerie Llamas got the Scorpions on the board early by scoring on a free kick from just outside the goal box three minutes into the game. Cactus scored late in the first half to tie the game at 1’s going into halftime. Cactus came out of halftime and put in two early second half goals to take a 3-1 lead. DE’s responded with a goal by Kayla Garcia in the 65th minute of the game to close the gap to 3-2. DE was on the offensive attack the last 15 minutes of the game and had several opportunities to even the score, including a late goal that was called back by an offsides call, but ultimately could not convert on a game tying goal and fell to Cactus 3-2. The loss was disappointing, but it was great to see the ladies continue to battle even after falling behind by a couple of goals.
The girls responded to Tuesday’s loss with a dominating win over Peoria in the rain on Friday. After a slow first half that left DE with a 2-0 halftime lead, the Scorpions put in three goals in the first ten minutes of the second half and cruised to an 8-0 victory. Valerie Llamas had four goals in the victory, giving her 8 on the season. Kayla Garcia added three goals of her own giving her 10 for the season. Senior defender Brandi Spann got a few minutes of play on the offensive end and was able to score her first goal of the season. Defenders Mercedes Stevwing, Vanessa Gutierrez, Brandi Spann, and Jasmine Pulido did a fantastic job of immediately shutting down any Peoria offensive runs and getting the ball back up to our offense, as displayed by DE’s 30 shots on goal to Peoria’s 1. Carolina Rodriguez, Andee Montanez and Leonor Carlos did a great job of winning possession and distributing from their midfield position. This victory puts the team’s record at 2-1-1 on the season.
The lady’s have two more region games this week with Barry Goldwater on Tuesday at 4pm and Notre Dame Prep on Thursday at 5pm.
